Sea Scout Ship Columbia Ranger

Columbia Maryland

ScoutFleet 2002 Long Cruise

-----------------------------------------

The year 2002 marked the 90th anniversary of the founding of Sea Scouting in the United States. The Northeast Region Sea Scouting Committee decided to help celebrate the occasion by holding a Parade of Small Ships in New York City, and called it ScoutFleet 2002. Over four hundred Sea Scouts and leaders from all over the Northeast and from as far away as Texas and Alabama converged on New York City to sail past the Statue of Liberty and enjoy one another's company. The focal point was the docks next to the retired aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Intrepid.

Twelve members of S.S.S. Columbia Ranger sailed to ScoutFleet 2002 and back on Windress, forty foot yawl owned by Ship Committeeman Brian Johnson, and S.S.T.V. Delphinus, the Ship's C&C 30 sloop. Our Ship's vessels were joined by a dozen other Sea Scout vessels from the Chesapeake, making the Maryland/Virginia contingent the largest group from outside of the New York City area. The main event took place on July 27, 2002, but our long cruise took roughly one week in each direction.

We hope you enjoy the following pictures from ScoutFleet 2002 with members of S.S.S. Columbia Ranger.
