ON-BOARD GREEN LANTERN

  • For our members , this is where the real fun starts! Sea Scouts get out on the water as sailors- not passengers.Quatermaster Aaron Sing and Skipper Dave Mosher They are the crew, working deck hands, lookouts, helmsmen and navigators. A veteran scout acts as crew chief on each trip, giving directions to the newer hands.

  • Ship 272 has a 34-foot sailboat, Green Lantern, which is used as the group's classroom and floating summer camp. She carries up to two adults and six scouts at a time, including live-aboard cruises.

  • Learning the ropes of sailing begins during the winter, with courses in boating terminology, safety rules of the road and aids to navigation. Come spring, the scouts get to go out to the boatyard in small work parties to get the Green Lantern ready for the sailing season. This gives them a familiarity with the boat and an understanding of basic skills by time the boat is launched. Then the fun begins out on the water!
